Characteristics of 304 stainless steel

304 stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance and good resistance to intergranular corrosion. For oxidizing acids, it is found in experiments that 304 stainless steel has strong corrosion resistance in nitric acid with a concentration ≤ 65% below the boiling temperature. It also has good corrosion resistance to alkaline solutions and most organic and inorganic acids. 304 stainless steel is a common stainless steel, also known as 18/8 stainless steel in the industry. Its corrosion resistance is better than 430 stainless steel, but the price is cheaper than 316 stainless steel, so it is widely used in life, such as some high-end stainless steel tableware, outdoor railings and so on.

Although this type of stainless steel is very common in China, the name “304 stainless steel” comes from the United States. Many people think that 304 stainless steel is a type designation in Japan, but strictly speaking, the official name of 304 stainless steel in Japan is “SUS304″. 304 is a versatile stainless steel, which is widely used to make equipment and parts that require good overall performance (corrosion resistance and formability). In order to maintain the inherent corrosion resistance of stainless steel, steel must contain more than 16% chromium and more than 8% nickel.

304 stainless steel is a grade of stainless steel produced in accordance with the American ASTM standard.

304 is equivalent to our country’s 0Cr18Ni9 [it has been changed to 06Cr19Ni10 according to GB/T 20878-2007] stainless steel.

Basic information: The chemical grade of 304 stainless steel is 06Cr19Ni10. The old grade (0Cr18Ni9) contains 19% chromium and 8-10% nickel. 304 stainless steel is the most widely used stainless steel and heat-resistant steel. Used in food production equipment, general chemical equipment, nuclear energy, etc.

Density: Stainless steel SUS304 has a density of 7.93 g/cm3. Product standard It is a very important parameter for 304 stainless steel, which directly determines its corrosion resistance and its value. The most important elements in 304 are Ni and Cr, but they are not limited to these two elements. The specific requirements are stipulated by the product standard. The common judgment in the industry is that as long as the Ni content is greater than 8% and the Cr content is greater than 18%, it can be considered as 304 stainless steel. Below are some common product standards and tests.

304 stainless steel judgment

To determine whether a material is 304 stainless steel, it must meet the requirements of each element in the product standard. As long as one does not meet the requirements, it cannot be called 304 stainless steel.

1. ASTM A276 (Standard Specification for Stainless Steel Bars and Shapes) 304 C Mn P S Si Cr Ni requirements,% 0.08 2.00 0.045 0.030 1.00 18.0-20.0 8.0-11.0

2. ASTM A240 (Chromium and Chromium-Nickel Stainless Steel Plate, Sheet, and Strip for Pressure essels and for General Applications) 304 C Mn PS Si Cr Ni N requirements,% 0.07 2.00 0.045 0.030 0.075 17.5–19.5 8.0–10.5 0.10 3. JIS G4305 (cold-rolled cold-rolled stainless steel plate, sheet and strip) SUS 304 C Mn PS Si Cr Ni requirement,% 0.08 2.00 0.045 0.030 1.00 18.0-20.0 8.0-10.5 4 JIS G4303 (Stainless steel bars) SUS 304 C Mn PS Si Cr Ni requirements,% 0.08 2.00 0.045 0.030 1.00 18.0-20.0 8.0-10.5 The above four standards are just a few common standards, in fact, ASTM and JIS mention There are more than these standards to 304. Each standard actually has different requirements for 304, so if you want to determine whether a material is 304, the accurate expression should be whether it meets the 304 requirements in a certain product standard. System description: 304 stainless steel is the most widely used one Chromium-nickel stainless steel has good corrosion resistance, heat resistance, low temperature strength and mechanical properties. It is resistant to corrosion in the atmosphere. If it is an industrial atmosphere or heavily polluted area, it needs to be cleaned in time to avoid corrosion. It is suitable for food processing, storage and transportation. Has good processing properties and weldability. Plate heat exchangers, bellows, household products, building materials, chemicals, food industry, etc. 304 stainless steel is a nationally recognized food-grade stainless steel.
